1. Les Rimaquoi : Act I, Scene I Le Misanthrope,
Molière Up to date as always, here is the great French playwright giving life to two French television journalists...
LE MISANTHROPE

ACTE I SCENE 1
Philinte, Alceste . PHILINTE Alceste ! Alceste ! Qu'est-ce donc ? Qu'avez-vous ?
ALCESTE Laissez-moi, je vous prie, et allez vous cacher.
PHILINTE Mais on entend les gens, au moins, sans se fâcher.
ALCESTE Moi, je veux me fâcher, et ne veux point entendre.
PHILINTE Dans vos brusques chagrins je ne puis vous comprendre, Et quoique amis enfin, je suis tout des premiers...
ALCESTE Moi, votre ami ? Rayez cela de vos papiers. J'ai fait jusques ici profession de l'être; Mais après ce qu'en vous je viens de vois paraître, Je vous déclare tout net que je ne le suis plus, Et ne veux nulle place en des coeurs corrompus.
PHILINTE Je suis donc bien coupable, Alceste, a votre compte ?
ALCESTE Allez, vous devriez mourir de pure honte; Je vous vois accabler un homme de caresses, Et témoigner pour lui les dernières tendresses. Et quand je vous demande après quel est cet homme, A peine pouvez-vous dire comme il se nomme. Morbleu ! c'est une chose indigne, lâche, infâme, De s'abaisser ainsi jusqu'à trahir son âme.
PHILINTE Je ne vois pas, pour moi, que le cas soit pendable, Et je vous supplierai d'avoir pour agréable Que je me fasse un peu grâce sur votre arrêt, Et ne me pende pas pour cela, s'iI vous plait.
ALCESTE Que la plaisanterie est de mauvaise grâce !
PHILINTE Mais, sérieusement, que voulez-vous qu'on fasse ?
ALCESTE Je veux qu'on soit sincère, et qu'en homme d'honneur, On ne lâche aucun mot qui ne parte du coeur.
ALCESTE Quel avantage a-t-on qu'un homme vous caresse, Vous jure amitié, foi, zèle, estime, tendresse, Et vous fasse de vous un éloge éclatant, Lorsque au premier faquin il court en faire autant ?
PHILINTE Le monde par vos soins ne se changera pas ; Et puisque la franchise a pour vous tant d'appas, Je vous dirai tout franc que cette maladie, Partout où vous allez, donne la comédie, Et qu'un si grand courroux contre les moeurs du temps Vous tourne en ridicule auprès de bien des gens.
ALCESTE Tant mieux, morbleu ! tant mieux, c'est ce que je demande Ce m'est un fort bon signe, et ma joie en est grande
PHILINTE Vous voulez un grand mal à la nature humaine !
ALCESTE Oui, j'ai conçu pour elle une effroyable haine.
PHILINTE Encore en est-il bien, dans le siècle on nous sommes...
ALCESTE Non : elle est générale, et je hais tous les hommes.
LA FEMME J’ai déjà entendu ça quelque part.

2. Two scenes from Plus Belle La Vie This French soap is very pedagogic. We get told about marital relationships, the internet, obesity - and of course the problem of illegal immigration. Here is Mrs Sango and daughter Lily. They are going to be deported, and Blanche the teacher, and Guillaume the doctor are going to help by becoming Lily's godparents in a civil baptism ceremony. Warning - get your hankies out, this gets emotional... It's a transcription exercise.

I found this funny. And also horrifying that young French people are modelling their English on a London English that gets right up my nose.

4 Bibliothèque Médicis : Interview with Hamid Senni This isn't at all horrifying, but very inspiring. You will rarely see French broadcasters indulging in criticism of their own country and it was typically courageous of Jean-Pierre Elkebbach to interview this gifted young man of Morrocan background who was so badly treated in France and who succeeded in London. And who remains stubbornly, and touchingly, faithful to the Republic... It's a transcription exercise - not all that easy.
