You would expect a news item in the evening news to be Level 1, wouldn't you? And so it is for the most part. But my goodness, some of the interviews in this piece defeated my ear completely. I left a few gaps in this one. See how you do) |

Heartwarming stories aren't much my style, but this man's story, from the first evening news of France 2 of la rentrée, is quite remarkable. And linguistically interesting. Always challenging, this mixture you get in news items, of straightforward voice-overs, and 'natural' voices which are far from easy to follow |

Arte television's summer series on the 80's finished with a sparkler of a documentary marrying the phenomenon of Lady Di with that of Madonna. Difficult to find an extract to summarise the whole - I might come back to this. Linguistically, the unscripted contributions of Stéphane Bern and the lady at the end, make this occasionally challenging. |

France 2's breakfast show Télé-Matin, has a nice section at about 7.20 GMT which I occasionally catch - Rendez-vous culturel. Here is a piece on the Museum of the Police in Paris, with a hapless young journalist expressing enthusiasm, and the link-man, William Leymergie, being, as always, irritating |

Christophe Hondelatte's weekly review of significant crimes is always interesting, as much for the variety of voices as for the high-tension, tense nature of the narration. Good value for the student. |

From the French dubbed version of Perfect Murder. I include it because the background noise and muttered dialogue turn a straightforward scriupt into something of a nightmare to follow. But this is exactly the sort of thing that we must train the ear to recognise |

Here is Dany Boon, on form, in a take-off of a dating show Tournez menages |

This is from a superb documentary on the French colonists of Acadie, and their descendants in the region round La Rochelle today. I don't waste time feeling guilty about what the English did to the Scots, the Irish, the Welsh, the Acadians... not to mention the Indians, Africans and all the other people we mistreated in colonial days. I'm just glad the days of Empire are over. |

The imitator Laurent Gerra is here paired with the excellent comedy actress Virginie Lemoine in a take off of the famous Jack Lang - Anne Sinclair interview. The ex-minister of Culture is self-parodying anyway, so I have preceded the sketch with a little recent Lang. |

Here is Florence Foresti as Anne-Sophie de la Coquillette from Laurent Ruquier's chat-show a couple of years ago. Let's hope they bring this back for October 2009 |
