France 2 screened Home last Friday. A very
beautiful film, and particularly good for students practising at this
level. The voice (I think of Jacques Gambin) is neutral, level, moderately
paced. But note that the content is more complex, and more literary than
that of a news report, and so more difficult

A nice documentary on Concorde with an actress
doing the voice-over. A little harder because the voice uses some of the
short-cuts that you hear in everyday spoken French. But it is still very
clear.

I include this clip to demonstrate that the difficulty
of an extract is as much to do with content as with pronunciation or speed
of delivery. The voices in this philosophical discussion are clear and
moderately-paced. But the content is very difficult to follow the first
time you hear it.

We have had this extract from a documentary on the
Parisian police during the Occupation before, but not with the text. No
comment is needed...

Here is George Marchais, the celebrated communist
leader. Clips are often screened to raise a smile. But he was a bully, and
I was happy to see, at the end of this extract, Lionel Jospin get the
better of him.

Le grand journal of Michel Denisot. Chat shows
are an source of colloquial French, although the content, as here, is
often mind-numbingly horrid.

Here is an extract from Noblesse Oblige,
the French title of the Ealing comedy Kind Hearts and Coronets. The
Edwardian style and sound quality make it less than simple to follow. The
actress who does Sibella catches perfectly the sound of the voice of Joan
Greenwood

For our top two places we first have Roland
Magdane in La visite de Paris. A very thick accent, and some
vocabulary to add to your list of things not to say when visiting France.

Finally this week, Fabrice Luchini. A favourite
clip from the book show La grande librairie where two writers
nearly came to blows, and Luchini intervenes with Moliere.
