La Vie Outre-Manche
.
With cassette tape.  All pieces scripted and read clearly for intermediate level students.

The people who do La Vie Outre-Manche  also do a whole series of audio books offering a parallel English-French text with audio cassette.

Bien-Dir
e
With CD or cassette.  As above, but some interviews in ' ordinary' French read by the production team.

Champs-Elysées

A rather splendid audio magazine. With cassette or CD. The magazine is simply the transcript of the audio, but with a comprehensive vocabulary and many notes. The content is a mixture of production team scripts and interviews with celebrities, politicians and other.  And the content is interesting!

Authentik en français

The level is supposed to be A level - some of the interviews in the street, or with sports people, are really quite hard. Much of the content is scripted and read by a pair of earnest young people. It's excellent, but be prepared to hear much politically correct moralising on graffiti in the metro, advertising, the consumer society and Zinedine Zidane

Français dans le mond
e (version with CD)
Very useful, and extracts pop up in DALF preparation exercises. However, the numbers with CD only come out twice a year, and the presenters feel the need to intersperse the pieces with funny voices and up-beat music. Nothing worse than a trendy teacher...

Which publication is right for you?

If you are at an intermediate level, and starting to listen to French the La Vie Outre-Manche and Bien-Dire are excellent. These are studio recordings, not the French of the street, and so very clear.

Champs-Elysées is a mixture of studio pieces - but read at normal speed - and interviews with 'real' people. Towards the end of each magazine the standard becomes quite demanding.

Authentik en français is street French, selected carefully to be demanding but not impossible. A fairly high standard.

If you can manage Champs-Elysées without difficulty, and most of Authentik en français, then you're probably wondering where to go next. That's what this site is for.
